Breakfast this morning, then check out and head for nearby Yorktown and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown (formerly the Yorktown Victory Center.)  The museum tells the story of the nation’s founding, from the twilight of the colonial period to the dawn of the Constitution and beyond.  The outdoor living-history area offers artillery demonstrations, a re-created Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm based on a real-life 18th-century family.  After you visit, continue south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where you will check into you hotel and prepare for dinner at a local restaurant.   (B, D)
Tuesday, September 11
Enjoy breakfast, then depart for a visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial.  The Visitors Center has a full-scale replica of the original plane, as well as exhibits and talks on history of the Wright Brothers.  The Centennial Pavilion houses exhibits dealing with the Outer Banks at the turn-of-the-century, the evolution of aviation, the challenges of flight and NASA-sponsored exhibits.  In the afternoon, depart for Manteo and Elizabethan Gardens where history, mystery and fantasy are combined.  The gardens are a memorial to the first English colonists and Queen Elizabeth I.  Afterwards, proceed to nearby Roanoke Island Festival Park, a living history museum which brings to life the 16th-century colony through interactive exhibits and displays.  You will even find a recreation of the Elizabeth II, the ship which brought England’s first colonists to the New World.  Also included is the Settlement Site, the Roanoke Adventure Museum, the American Indian Town, the Legend of Two Path film and more.  Once again, dinner will be provided at a restaurant in the area.   (B, D)
Wednesday, September 12
After breakfast, depart with your guide for a tour of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.  Included will be a stop at the Bodie Island Lighthouse for a perimeter tour and photo opportunity.  Later, visit Cape Hatteras Lighthouse where you may view the tallest brick lighthouse on the American Coast, and also the tallest brick structure ever moved to another location.  There will be time to explore the Visitor’s Center, then continue to the Hatteras Ferry Docks where you can enjoy lunch on your own.  In the afternoon, visit The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, one of the finest, most innovative maritime facilities in the nation.  The waters off North Carolina’s Outer Banks entomb thousands of vessels and countless mariners who lost a desperate struggle against the forces of war, piracy and nature, thus becoming known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic.  Also included is time at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, including the original station built in 1874 and a second station constructed in 1911.  Listen to fantastic stories of the heroic feats of our nation’s first storm warriors before returning to your motel to freshen up.  Dinner has been arranged at one of the area’s popular restaurants.  (B, D)
